Family-Based Immigration
One of the prime objectives underlying U.S. immigration law is family unity. Family relationships are used in immigration through petitions by U.S. citizens or permanent residents for certain alien family members to become permanent residents. Additionally, spouses and minor unmarried children of aliens who obtain U.S. permanent residence through most avenues, derive permanent residence at the same time.
The acquisition of family-based immigration status generally is a two-step process: (i) petition; and (ii) visa processing or adjustment of status (green card).
